Title: Cultural Appropriation or Reconciliation?
Abstract: How can choral practitioners avoid misappropriating indigenous cultures in our art form and contribute to reconciliation in Canada? Conductor Christina Murray is a frequent collaborator with Indigenous artists. Co-facilitated by Sarain-Carson Fox, Anishinaabe contemporary dancer, and Rebecca Thomas, Mi’kmaq poet laureate of Halifax, who both frequently work with choirs.
Biography: Conductor Christina Murray has collaborated with Mi’kmaq, Inuit, and Ojibway artists in over 40 performances across the Maritime provinces and Ontario. She has co-facilitated cross-cultural learning opportunities for Xara Choral Theatre Ensemble, Dalhousie University music and theatre students, and the Canadian Chamber Choir. This session will be co-facilitated by Sarain-Carson Fox, Anishinaabe contemporary dancer, activist, and television personality, as well as Rebecca Thomas, Mi’kmaq poet laureate of Halifax and spoken word artists. Both Sarain and Rebecca have frequently worked with choirs.
