Title: The Star Gatherer: School and Community Boys Choir Performance Project
Abstract: In the 2015/16 school year, the Gaudeamus Choirs of Halton Hills (Ontario) created an outreach project with three school choirs, who joined the Gaudeamus Choir in an opera performance project. The purpose was two-fold: to expose children to contemporary opera, and to provide an opportunity for boys to sing together. This session will detail the planning and implementation of the project, musical and social ways of engaging boys in singing, and introducing children to opera through active participation.
Biography: Diane Murray-Charrett holds a Master of Music Education from the University of Toronto, a Bachelor of Music Education from Brandon University, and Orff Certification from the University of Manitoba. Diane is the founding conductor of the Gaudeamus Choirs of Halton Hills, and a music specialist in the Halton District School Board, where she has been a frequent conductor of the Halton School Board’s Regional Elementary Mass choir, most recently in 2017, for the annual ‘Showcase’ concert. Her conducting training includes study with Dr. Rodney Eichenberger, Dr. Doreen Rao, Dr. Lori-Anne Dolloff, and masterclass sessions with Diane Loomer and Lydia Adams. She has held board member positions with the Saskatchewan Music Educator’s Association and Choir’s Ontario. Past conducting credits include the Oakville Children’s Choir and the Hamilton Children’s Choir. Although she has extensive experience working with award winning choral groups and vocalists of all ages, the bulk of her career has been spent encouraging young people to find their voice through the study of excellent choral repertoire.
