Title: Singing the Spiritual
Abstract: Conductor Floydd Ricketts presents a workshop on effectively performing Spirituals from an informed and respectful standpoint. Workshop topics will include the origin of Spirituals, diction, and physicalizing the music in order to achieve more nuanced phrasing. Participants will be invited to sing through pieces both notated and learned by rote.
Biography: Floydd Ricketts is the artistic director and conductor of the King Edward Choir (Barrie ON), and Sable 8, a chamber choir in Toronto that specializes in underperformed classical and folk music. Floydd is currently studying at The Schulich School of Music at McGill University, as a doctoral candidate in choral conducting. He recently had the distinct privilege of working with renowned soprano Kathleen Battle in concert, and in rehearsal as the assistant conductor of her Toronto-stop choral ensemble. Described by his peers as a highly skilled conductor and orchestrator, he has also written and arranged a number of works for mixed voices and orchestra. He is the co-founder of the Greater Toronto Philharmonic Orchestra, and regularly works in the professional theatre as a musical director.
