Title: Creating inclusive spaces in choral organizations (Panel, Session 3)
Abstract: Creating inclusive spaces in choral organizations: This panel discussion will explore several choral organizations across Canada that are working to create spaces of inclusivity and participation to a wider group of singers. Discussion will focus on the different choral inclusion models that have emerged across Canada. Through this panel dialogue, we hope to foster further discussion on how our work as choral organizations can transform lives and foster musical growth for young people of all abilities (with Brad Ratzlaff; Carol Ratzlaff; Jane Gosine; Leanne Kearsey; Mendelt Hoekstra; Susan Farrell; Charlene Pauls and Kellie Walsh)
Biography: Kellie Walsh is the Artistic Director of Shallaway Youth Choir and the founder and Artistic Director of Lady Cove Women's Choir. She holds Bachelor degrees in both Music and Music Education from Memorial University, in addition to a Masters degree in conducting. Most recently, the senior choir of Shallaway received first place in the International Llangollen Choral Competition in Whales and an award for the overall highest mark of the festival. Lady Cove Women’s Choir is a two-time winner of the CBC Radio National Competition for Amateur Choirs, was invited to represent Canada in the 9th World Symposium on Choral Music in Argentina. Kellie's work has brought her across Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, the United States, South America, Europe and Asia. From deep and proud roots in Newfoundland and Labrador, she has become well known in Canada and internationally for embracing the medium of choral singing as an opportunity to explore leadership potential, identity building and social/civic engagement. .
