Biography: Composer, Dr. Larry Nickel, joined a choir when he was three years old and started composing music on an accordion when he was fourteen. His teacher put him in charge of the high school chamber choir when he was 17 and he was hooked for life. After teaching music for 25 years, Nickel returned to UBC to earn his doctoral and hone composition skills. Now he owns and operates Cypress Choral Music which champions the music nearly 100 Canadian composers. After directing the Jubilate Vocal Ensemble for five years, he now sings low bass in the Vancouver Cantata Singers. Luminaries such as Edith Wiens, Ben Heppner and Pinchas Zukerman have performed his compositions. His doctoral thesis, Requiem for Peace, a major work in thirteen languages for chorus, soloists and orchestra, has been presented 20 times, most recently in New Jersey. Larry and Edna live in by the seawall in Yaletown Vancouver, close to their children and grandchildren.
